Osmosis is a natural process in which water (the solvent) spontaneously passes through a semipermeable membrane from a solution of lower concentration to one of higher concentration. This process ultimately leads to a dynamic equilibrium of solute concentration on both sides of the semipermeable membrane.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a process in which water flows in the direction opposite to natural osmosis — specifically, from the concentrated solution to the diluted solution. This process must be driven by the application of external pressure. The reverse flow of water is resisted by multiple factors: the osmotic pressure on both sides of the semipermeable membrane, the inherent resistance of the membrane itself, and the additional resistance caused by fouling on the membrane surface and within its pores during operation. As a result, the external pressure applied in reverse osmosis must significantly exceed the inherent osmotic pressure difference of the solution.
